writing effective melodies
Pacing and meter
Just like when we speak, it is important to take breaths or pauses between musical phrases. Resting at regular intervals, generally at the end of a musical thought, allows what is being expressed to fully resonate with the listener.
Most popular melodies are structured to contain phrases of even lengths. Often these phrases are grouped in pairs, and pairs are grouped in even numbers to create larger sections such as verses or choruses.
