Creating motives

Effective individual phrases are not enough to create a compelling musical work. We must incorporate continuity between them in order to create an interesting narrative. One way to create continuity is through the repetition of motives, relatively short rhythmic or pitch-based patterns. Once a motif is established, it can be modified or transformed throughout a song, functioning as a thread which weaves from beginning to end.
